Are side-hinged garage doors secure?

Yes. Our timber garage doors use a multi-point locking system with hook bolts top and bottom, plus concealed steel dead bolts at head and threshold. Reinforced strike plates and anti-snap cylinders are standard. Insurance-approved locking to your policy specification available.

Can I have coach house style doors on an up-and-over frame?

Yes — we build coach house style timber facings that can be fitted to existing up-and-over, sectional or roller garage mechanisms if you want the timber aesthetic without changing the operating gear. However, for new installations we usually recommend proper side-hinged doors — they last longer, look better and don't need annual servicing.

What timber lasts longest for garage doors?

Because garage doors face south, west, or open onto driveways with reflected heat, they take a beating from UV and rain. Why Timber

A garage door that lifts

Most people spend six figures on a house and then let it down with a flat pressed-steel garage door. It's the largest single elevation on the front of most properties — get it wrong and it drags the whole street presence down.

A well-made timber garage door does the opposite. Vertical tongue-and-groove boarding, forged black hardware, matched hinges, weather-sealed threshold, glazed top lights that echo the house windows — the garage stops being a utility box and becomes part of the architecture.

Every set is bespoke — matched grain, matched glazing bars, matched ironmongery — but most projects fall into one of these three patterns.

Solid boarded pair

Traditional vertical tongue-and-groove boarding with forged strap hinges and matching pull handles. The classic English garage door — timeless, secure, and looks better as it ages.

Glazed top-light pair

Solid lower panels with a glazed section across the top — 4 or 6-pane Georgian bar or single panes. Brings daylight into the garage without compromising security.

Coach house set

Two, three or four full-height garage door sets in a matched run — coach house conversions, barns and larger properties. Painted to match your window trim or left as natural oak.

Garage doors take more abuse than any other opening on the house — wind, sun, driveway spray, weekly opening and closing. Ours are built to handle it.

Timber

Accoya (30-year above-ground warranty, dimensionally stable), European oak, engineered hardwood or Redwood softwood. Accoya recommended for exposed south/west-facing openings.

Construction

Frame with morticed and tenoned corners, vertical tongue-and-groove boarding pinned to frame from behind. Steel diagonal bracing on doors over 2.1m. All fixings stainless or galvanised.

Hinges

Heavy-duty T-hinges or strap hinges — hot-dip galvanised steel, powder-coated black or bright zinc. Three per leaf on doors up to 2.4m, four per leaf above.

Locking & Security

Multi-point locking with hook bolts top and bottom, plus concealed steel dead bolts at head and threshold. Anti-snap Euro cylinder. Insurance-approved specification available.

Glazing (optional)

Double-glazed toughened safety glass in top lights — 4-pane, 6-pane Georgian bar or single panes. Obscured, frosted or clear. Sealed and factory-glazed.

Weather Sealing

Full-perimeter EPDM compression seal around the frame, plus a rebated centre-meeting stile with drip mould. Threshold with brush seal and stainless kick plate.

Finish

Microporous paint in any RAL colour, or Farrow & Ball and Little Greene heritage ranges. Natural oak finished with UV-stable oil or clear satin lacquer. Applied in our finishing bay.

Guarantee

30 years on Accoya timber against rot and decay. 10 years on hardware. 8+ years on paint before refresh coat needed.

Coach house conversions and barn projects usually have two, three or four garage or workshop openings in a matched run — and getting them to read as a set matters as much as getting each door right.

We build the whole run at the same time, from the same batch of timber, with matched glazing bar arrangement, matched ironmongery and matched paint. Every hinge sits in exactly the same position. Every top light lines up. When the run reads correctly, the building looks resolved.

What to know before you commission.

How much do bespoke timber garage doors cost?

A single door supplied and fitted is typically £2,800–£4,200. A double pair is £4,500–£7,500 depending on timber (softwood at the lower end, Accoya and oak at the upper), size, glazing configuration and ironmongery. Coach house sets of three or four are quoted individually. Every project gets a fixed, itemised quote after a free site survey.

Are side-hinged timber garage doors secure enough?

Yes. We use multi-point locking with hook bolts top and bottom, plus concealed steel dead bolts at head and threshold, and anti-snap Euro cylinders. Reinforced strike plates are standard. We can specify to insurance-approved standards if your home insurance requires it.

Won't timber warp or twist on a big garage door?

Not if it's built right. Traditional softwood on a large opening will move — this is why we recommend Accoya for anything over 2.1m or facing south/west. Accoya is dimensionally stable, doesn't cup or twist, and holds paint 3× longer than softwood. Steel diagonal bracing is used behind the boarding on larger doors as additional insurance.

Can I have glazing in a garage door?

Yes — 4-pane, 6-pane Georgian bar or single-pane top lights are popular for daylighting the garage without compromising security. All glazing is toughened safety glass and can be clear, obscure or frosted. Full-height glazed sections are also possible if security allows.

Can you match existing windows and doors on the house?

Yes — matching the garage door to the house is the point. We match glazing bar arrangement, moulding profile, timber species and paint colour to whatever else we've fitted or you already have. Send us a photo of your front elevation and we'll design accordingly.

Can I convert an up-and-over frame to side-hinged?

Usually yes — the opening dimensions are similar. We survey the opening, remove the old up-and-over gear, adjust the lintel and threshold if needed, and fit a new timber frame with side-hinged doors. Most conversions take one to two days on site.

How long from order to fitting?

Typically 6–9 weeks — 5–7 weeks lead time in the workshop for manufacture and finishing, then a day or two on site depending on how much frame work is needed. We book the fit date at the point of order so you can plan around it.
