A bespoke timber stable door supplied and fitted in Yorkshire typically costs between £2,200 and £4,800 depending on timber choice, glazing configuration, ironmongery and paint finish. We provide fixed-price quotes after a free site visit.

Are stable doors as secure as normal doors?

Yes. Our stable doors use a multi-point locking system on the bottom leaf with a hook bolt and anti-snap cylinder, plus a hidden shoot bolt that locks the top leaf into the bottom leaf. When locked shut, the door is functionally equivalent to a solid entrance door — PAS24 rated on request.

Are they draughty where the two leaves meet?

No. Modern stable doors have a full mid-rail weather seal — a rebated timber lip on the top leaf sits over a compression gasket on the bottom leaf, so the join is completely sealed when the door is shut.

Can I have a pet flap fitted?

Yes. We can fit a cat flap or dog flap directly into the bottom panel during manufacture — much neater than retrofitting one to an existing door. Petsafe and SureFlap microchip-activated options supported.

Three ways to spec a stable door.

Every stable door we build is bespoke — but most of our customers want one of these three arrangements.

Glazed top, panelled bottom

The classic cottage arrangement — a fully glazed top leaf lets light and views into the kitchen, with a solid panelled bottom for privacy and security. Ideal for back doors onto gardens and courtyards.

Georgian-bar glazing

4-pane or 6-pane top leaves with proper astragal glazing bars — the traditional look for period properties, listed buildings and conservation areas. Clear, obscured or leaded glass options.

Country farmhouse

Cream or heritage-painted stable doors with matching pane arrangement, ready for boot-brushes, terracotta pots and a working farmhouse life. Made to be leaned on.

Every stable door leaves our finishing bay ready to work — sealed, glazed, ironmongery fitted, ready to fit.

Timber

Accoya (30-year above-ground warranty), European oak, engineered hardwood or Redwood softwood. Advice given for exposed coastal or rural sites.

Construction

Stiles and rails morticed and tenoned, glued and pinned. Panels floating in grooves to allow seasonal movement. Fully rebated mid-rail with weather seal.

Glazing

28mm argon-filled double-glazed sealed units, soft-coat low-E glass. U-value 1.2 W/m²K. Georgian bars, obscure and leaded glass options.

Locking & Security

Multi-point lock on bottom leaf with hook bolt and anti-snap cylinder. Hidden shoot bolt secures top leaf into bottom leaf. PAS24 rated construction available.

Ironmongery

Solid brass, satin chrome, black hardware or antique bronze. Three-lever mortice or Yale euro cylinder. Matched hinges top and bottom in your chosen finish.

Finish

Microporous paint in any RAL colour or heritage range (Farrow & Ball, Little Greene). Oil or clear lacquer available for oak. Applied in our finishing bay.

Pet Flaps

Cat and dog flaps fitted flush into the bottom panel during manufacture. Petsafe and SureFlap microchip-activated options supported. Sized to your pet.

Guarantee

30 years on Accoya timber against rot and decay. 10 years on hardwood construction. 8+ years on paint finish before refresh coat needed.

Locked shut, it's functionally equivalent to a solid entrance door — PAS24 certification available on request.

Isn't it draughty where the two halves meet?

Not on a properly built modern stable door. A rebated timber lip on the top leaf sits over a compression weather seal on the bottom leaf, so when the door is closed the mid-rail is fully sealed. There's no perceptible draught, heat loss or noise ingress compared to a standard door.

Can I use a stable door as my main back door?

Absolutely — it's the most common use case. A stable door works brilliantly as a kitchen or utility back door: leave the top half open for ventilation while keeping children and pets safely inside. Also popular for serving out to a patio or garden.

Can you fit a pet flap into a stable door?

Yes, we build them in during manufacture rather than retrofitting later — this gives you a much neater flush finish with the paint carrying through the frame. Petsafe, SureFlap microchip-activated and standard flaps all supported.

What timber do you recommend?

For exposed or coastal properties, Accoya — the 30-year above-ground warranty is peerless and it doesn't move with humidity. For sheltered rural properties, engineered hardwood is a great mid-price option. Oak is beautiful when finished with oil, but needs a bit more maintenance. We'll advise based on the location and exposure of the door.

How long does a stable door take to make and fit?

Typically 5–7 weeks from order to fit — 4-5 weeks lead time in the workshop, then a day on site to remove the old door, prepare the opening, fit and seal. We'll book the fit date at the point of order so you can plan around it.
