Accoya is a modified softwood that behaves like a dense hardwood. It’s stable, sustainable and durable in ways that traditional timber simply isn’t — which is why almost every window and door we make starts with Accoya as the default.

    Dimensionally stable

    Accoya swells and shrinks up to 80% less than conventional timber. Frames don’t twist or warp, sashes don’t stick, doors close the same in July as they do in January.

    Guaranteed against rot and fungal decay for 50 years above ground, 25 years in-ground or fresh water — outperforms teak, oak and tropical hardwoods in independent testing.

    Sustainable and non-toxic

    Made from fast-grown FSC-certified softwood, acetylated with food-grade vinegar — Cradle to Cradle Gold certified, with zero toxic residues and a smaller carbon footprint than tropical hardwood.

Our Story

A Yorkshire family business since 1999.

Bailey Hague Joinery was started in 1999 by Robert Bailey-Hague and today is still run by Robert and his partner Susannah. Over more than two decades we've quietly become one of Yorkshire's most trusted names for bespoke timber windows and doors.

Every project is treated the same, whether it's a single front door for a Wetherby cottage or a full house of sash windows for a Grade II listed home in North Yorkshire. We design, specify and install to your exact requirements — with quality control and project management from first survey to final finish.

We work with homeowners, architects, developers and heritage specialists across York, Harrogate, Leeds, Wetherby, Boston Spa, Tadcaster and Sherburn in Elmet, with projects further afield across the UK including boutique hotels within the Bruntwood Estate.

Common questions.

A few things people usually want to know before commissioning bespoke timber joinery.

How long do timber windows last?

Our bespoke Accoya timber windows come with a 30-year guarantee against rot and warping and, properly maintained, can be expected to last well over 60 years. Traditional hardwood windows typically last 40-60 years with regular repainting.

Can I fit new timber windows in a listed building?

Yes. We specialise in listed and heritage properties across Yorkshire. All new windows are designed to match original profiles, glazing bar sizes and mouldings to comply with conservation officer requirements. We often work directly with your architect or heritage consultant on listed applications.

Are timber windows better than uPVC?

For period properties, listed buildings and premium homes, timber windows offer better aesthetics, longer lifespan (60+ years vs 20-30 for uPVC), superior thermal performance in modern Accoya frames, and significantly higher property value. Timber is also fully repairable — uPVC is not.

Which areas of Yorkshire do you cover?

We're based in Sherburn in Elmet and cover the whole of Yorkshire including York, Harrogate, Leeds, Wetherby, Boston Spa, Tadcaster, Selby, Wakefield and Pontefract. For larger projects and specialist work we regularly deliver and install across mainland UK.

Are you Certass registered?

Yes. Bailey Hague Joinery is a Certass registered installer, which means every installation is self-certified for current Building Regulations. Every job also carries a separate 10-year insurance-backed guarantee via HomePro. We are also an Accoya certified contractor and a Havwood certified flooring installer.

How much do bespoke timber windows cost?

Pricing depends on size, style, timber and glazing specification. As a rough guide, expect £900-£1,800 per Accoya casement window fitted, and £1,500-£3,500 per traditional double-glazed sash window fitted. We provide free, no-obligation quotes after an on-site survey.
